Since its discovery, psychoanalysis has been one of the defining influences of the 20th century, with a profound impact on the humanities and social sciences. However, in the public eye it is often equated with the insights of its founder, the Viennese neurologist Sigmund Freud<\/strong>. The further evolution of psychoanalysis, particularly through the works of Joseph Sandler<\/strong> and Melanie Klein<\/strong>, remains far less known to the public. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alfred Rink\u2019s<\/strong> introductory text, tailored for the curious layperson, aims to bridge this knowledge gap. It combines elements of psychoanalytic theory with numerous practical treatment and therapy examples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We spoke to author Alfred Rink<\/strong> about the development of psychoanalysis since the time of Sigmund Freud and why it is still relevant today. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What was your motivation for the book?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Since its discovery, psychoanalysis has been one of the defining intellectual influences of the 20th century. It has had a lasting impact on the humanities and social sciences. Many of its concepts and terms, although unfortunately often too diluted or distorted, have been incorporated into general vocabulary. Accordingly, the book presented here is primarily written for the interested layperson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although psychoanalysis and every other science have naturally evolved since Sigmund Freud’s discoveries, in the public’s perception, psychoanalysis is still generally equated with his findings. Notably, the work of Melanie Klein, perhaps the most significant psychoanalyst after Freud, has remained relatively unknown. Closing this gap was perhaps my central motivation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What sets your book apart from other introductions to psychoanalysis?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

I believe it is the combination of different psychoanalytic topics. In addition to presenting the development of psychoanalytic theory from Sigmund Freud to his successors, or to Melanie Klein, there is also an approximately twenty-page treatment report as an example of therapeutic application, as well as a non-clinical application example in the context of interpreting the film Taxi Driver<\/em>. Finally, the book also includes a brief general introduction to the mind\u2013body problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is the role of psychoanalysis in the present, and what does psychoanalysis mean to you personally?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Although psychoanalysis no longer has a monopoly on therapy as it has been overtaken by other psychotherapeutic approaches in this field, it still offers unique access to the unconscious. This is what fascinates me about psychoanalysis: understanding the unconscious meaning of human actions, thoughts, fantasies, desires, and feelings, in the sense of a relentless search for truth. Consequently, psychoanalysis possesses a disturbing and uncomfortable element when it confronts us with our individual and collective self-deceptions, illusions, perceptual disorders, depths, and shallows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About the author<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Alfred Rink,<\/strong> born in 1949, originally studied computer science at the Technical University of Berlin. After several years of industry experience, a one-year research stay at Stanford University, California, and a three-year position as a scientific advisor for the European Commission, Alfred Rink, alongside a physics graduate, founded a company dedicated to developing software for industrial applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During his forties, Alfred Rink completed his training as a psychoanalyst at a training and further education institute of the German Psychoanalytical Association (DPV).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He is a member of the German Psychoanalytical Association, the International Psychoanalytical Association and the German Association for Psychoanalysis, Psychotherapy, Psychosomatic and Depth Psychology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was active in his own psychoanalytic practice and served as a lecturer at a training and further education institute of the DPV.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
