From the\nclassics to some light fiction<\/strong> \u2013 if you wish to develop your very own style of writing, there\u2019s no\ngetting around the great role models in literature. Whether you prefer the\nstraightforward style of Ernest Hemingway<\/a>, the elaborate\nworks of Franz Kafka<\/a> or the\nintricate designs of George R. R. Martin<\/a>: reading trains\nyour language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The path towards the applied artistic work of writing\nwas certainly not paved exclusively by male authors. Although their\nopportunities might have been limited in many cases \u2013 or perhaps precisely\nbecause of such social restrictions \u2013 women like Mary Wollstonecraft<\/strong> or Jane\nAusten <\/strong>began publishing their pioneering works as early as the\nmid-eighteenth century. Moving against all conventions of their time, these\ncourageous writers inspired women all over the globe. This makes it all the\nmore important to provide the space for honoring such icons of world\nliterature. Zelda Fitzgerald<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Zelda Sayre, better known as Zelda Fitzgerald, entered\nthe history books first and foremost under her surname as the eccentric woman\nat the side of Francis Scott Fitzgerald. Famous for her husband, infamous for\nher lifestyle \u2013 she embodied the spirit of the Roaring Twenties even more than\nJay Gatsby himself. Unfortunately her excellent writing has often been\nneglected for the benefit of gossip. Zelda Fitzgerald left behind much more\nthan her tragic existence, which ultimately ended in a fire, when she was\nstaying in a psychiatric hospital in 1948. Dedicating just as much of her life\nto writing as her considerably more famous husband, her literary career was\nregularly interrupted by hospital stays and resulted in just one novel \u2013 a\nforce of nature of intimidating quality. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The writer and journalist Matthias Penzel, for\nexample, described Fitzgerald\u2019s \u201cSave Me\nthe Waltz\u201d<\/em> as follows: \u201cRead just a\nfew pages and you begin to struggle to catch your breath: this exquisite yet\npowerful language, these cascades, associations and emotions Zelda bestows in\nthese sisters who reach puberty in the corset of the American South and flee to\nNew York \u2013 an autobiographical masterpiece.\u201d  \n<\/em>   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mary Shelley<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

One of the most significant works in world literature is the debut novel of Mary Shelley from 1818: \u201cFrankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus\u201d.<\/em> Nevertheless, her other novels \u201cValperga\u201d, \u201cPerkin Warbeck\u201d <\/em>or the apocalyptic \u201cThe Last Man\u201d <\/em>deserve just as much literary recognition. A certain fascination for social reforms as well as this talented author\u2019s radical, political mindset were part of her life from the start. After all, Mary Shelley was the daughter of the famous feminist Mary Wollstonecraft who spoke up for the rights of the cultivated woman in such ambitious works as \u201cThoughts on the Education of Daughters\u201d<\/em> or her \u201cA Vindication of the Rights of Woman\u201d <\/em>in the mid-eighteenth century.     <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Virginia Woolf <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In 2015 an international group of 82 literary critics\nselected four of her novels into the ranks of the 100 most important British\nnovels: \u201cTo the Lighthouse\u201d, \u201cMrs Dalloway\u201d,\n\u201cThe Waves\u201d, <\/em>and \u201cOrlando\u201d<\/em>. Once\nagain confirmed as a true literary icon some 78 years after her suicide,\nVirginia Woolf\u2019s recollections are famous for never lacking in esthetics neither\nfrom a literary nor a human perspective. Contemplating along the fine line\nbetween genius and madness all her life, the writer has become a highly\nstylized role model to many excellent and ambitious women in the world of\nliterature.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gertrude Stein<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Very different in terms of writing style is Gertrude\nStein\u2019s oeuvre, in which she aspired to translate aspects from the art of\npainting, such as impressionism and cubism, into her language. Born in\nPittsburgh in 1874, the reduced style of this American writer derived from what\nWilliam James termed \u201cstream of consciousness\u201d and is said to have inspired\nHemingway\u2019s writing. The author and publisher is well-known for her\noften-quoted line \u201cA rose is a rose is a\nrose is a rose<\/em>\u201d, which Hemingway allegedly could not resist to transform\ninto \u201cA bitch is a bitch is a bitch\nis a bitch\u201d <\/em>after a slight quarrel between these literary luminaries.\nGertrude Stein\u2019s figurative style never ceased to polarize her environment and is\nstill celebrated as an excellent example of experimental literature today.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
