Interview session with Calcia author Sofie Melchart.
Sofie Melchart, at the tender age of 16, has employed her fertile imagination to produce a book that has huge appeal for fantasy and science fiction addicts. Sofie, a first-time author, has opened up a fantasy world that will delight lovers of the genre. It features werewolves, shapeshifters, Shadow Knights, spellcasters and all manner of complex beings who will enthral readers with amazing feats of magic. The story also draws on the author’s love of nature. It has everything from high drama, family feuds, bloodthirsty warfare and penetrating insights into the world of werewolves and other mysterious and magical creatures. In some touching scenes, the author shows us that werewolves, just like humans, highly value romance and family life.
We talked with the young author about her writing process, and she even teased her favourite scene!
What was the process of writing the book like?
This is not the first story I have written. I had an idea, and I just sort of winged it from there. I believe it took maybe two months for the original to be finished. It might even have been more.
Do you have any other published books? Any books you are working on for the future?
Not yet, but I have one other book now in document format and a third waiting to be transferred. But I’m basically constantly writing something new.
What inspired you to write this story and want to share it?
I got inspired by a YouTube channel about the video game series Minecraft. It was called ‘Minecraft Diaries’.
From there, I took inspiration for my ‘Shadow Knights.’
Are there any unique qualities to the book?
Well firstly, I combine a lot of magical creatures. A lesbian couple are my main characters, and the people in my story have various ways to communicate with one another, telepathy, mind reading and modern technology, just to name a few. Other than that, my story contains werewolves, spellcasters, and Shadow Knights of various backgrounds. I feel it’s very important for cultures and communities to be represented in today’s literature.
Are your characters totally fictional? Or inspired by someone you know?
Most of my characters are fully fictional, but my real-life friends inspired a few of them.
Do you have a favourite chapter in your book?
Chapter Twenty-Four. If you read it, you will see why.
Is there a favourite scene in your book?
I don’t want to spoil too much, but my favourite chapter contains my favourite scene. There is quite a lot going on, and it gets intense. You’ll have to read my book for yourself to find out more!

About the author
Sofie Melchart was born in Vienna, Austria, in 2005. Her schooling consisted of five years at elementary school, followed by four years of new middle school. She is currently in her fourth year at a commercial academy. Her favourite activities are reading, writing, music, swimming and walking in nature. Her special skills are languages, insightfulness and having a powerful imagination. This is her first book.
