The true nature of the mind is the clarity of pure recognition of truth. It forms the origin of understanding, pure awareness without the influences of delusion through attachment and aversion, the knowledge of knowledge.
It is free from karmic imprints, free from the enslaving programs of the ego mind, the source of pure being, the source of healing.
True nature can be compared to the sky, while delusion by the ordinary mind is like clouds obscuring the clear sky. One sees the clouds and finds it difficult to believe that the truth is the blue sky, which cannot be seen because only clouds are visible.
A popular example of the delusion of the mind is the parable of the snake and the rope. A man believes he has stepped on a snake. He is convinced that the snake has bitten him and that it is a poisonous snake. In a panic, he runs home, informs his family, and begins his last rites as he feels his life force slowly ebbing away.
A friend who observes the situation explains to him that it was only a rope that the man had stepped on, which looked like a snake in the light. Next to the rope was a thorny bush. Due to his fear of snakes, the man ran blindly and injured himself on the thorny bush, convinced it was a snake bite. In reality, the snake only existed in the projection of the man’s ego mind, blinded by fear resulting from an imprint on his subconscious.
This blindness is universal. Many people do not recognize the rope, but believe they perceive the snake in fear.
Plato describes a similar division of the mind in his allegory of the cave. The people in the cave are chained and can only look in one direction, toward a wall on which shadows can be seen. These shadows are the projections of things filtered by the light behind the chained people. The people mistake the shadows for reality and are unaware of any other existence.
Only when someone escapes from the cave can they reach the light and recognize the actual things. However, the other captives will not believe the freed man when he returns and tells them about reality, as they only see him as another shadow on the wall.
These people only recognize the shadows of reality and consider their sensory perceptions to be the absolute truth. The cave dwellers reflect us–the deluded, sleeping, and unconscious people who do not know that they are in an illusory world. Without realizing the true nature of the mind, they cannot recognize the truth.
The true nature of the mind is described by Buddha through the four immeasurable attitudes: love, compassion, joy, and equanimity.
Every human being has the potential to cultivate and activate these immeasurable qualities of mind through meditation or special practices. Regular practice manifests itself in our physical and verbal behavior, as selfish thinking gives way to altruistic attitudes.
A person who puts their mind into these wholesome states is already in a heavenly state and experiences mental and physical healing through purity.
Immeasurable love is unconditional love that encompasses the wish that all beings find happiness and the causes for that happiness.
