My name is Tallulah.
I am 3½ years old.

My dad’s family is from Pakistan, and my mum is Afro-Caribbean – and they’re both British.

My Auntie Valerie is a manager at the Frederick Hurdle Day Centre in Leeds. They call it a multicultural centre. That means it’s a place where people from different races and cultures can meet to share ideas, talk about problems, and get advice and support in their everyday lives.

Auntie Valerie loves to help people!

She has worked very hard to get where she is, going to many courses and working on her personal development in her job. And now she’s become the youngest black manager at Leeds Social Services. Brilliant! And she helped to set up the Frederick Hurdle Day Centre. It’s amazing what she’s done – I’m so proud of her!

I love my Auntie Valerie very much and think of her as a kind of second mum. But Mummy is my real mum, of course!

One day, Mummy and I were invited to a ‘Black Awareness Course’ at the the University of Salford, in Manchester. I liked the sound of it – I think of myself as a very modern, intelligent girl, so I’m always eager to learn new things. I hope Mummy and I will enjoy it – and maybe we’ll make some new friends.

When we arrived, we saw a big old building, grey and tall, with a modern extension to one side. The entrance was a big wooden door in the centre, and over it was a big sign, which said ‘Welcome to the Black Awareness Course’ in big, bold letters. I pointed at the sign to make sure Mummy had seen it – and because I knew that Auntie Valerie had designed it!
